Cryolipolysis requires far more than attaching a cup to the body and switching a machine on. It requires understanding of adipose anatomy, subcutaneous versus visceral fat, treatment mapping, applicator selection, skin protection, cold-related contraindications and rare adverse events.
What is fat freezing?
Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling to target suitable subcutaneous fat cells without surgery.
Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than many surrounding tissues. When an appropriate layer of fat is drawn into the applicator and exposed to controlled cooling, the treatment can trigger apoptosis – a programmed process of fat-cell death. The body then gradually processes the affected cells over the following weeks. This is why results are progressive rather than immediate.
The fat pocket is assessed
Fat freeze is designed for pinchable subcutaneous fat. We assess whether there is enough suitable tissue for the applicator to safely draw into the cup.
A protective membrane is applied
The skin is protected before the applicator is attached.
Vacuum draws the tissue in
The applicator creates suction, gently drawing the selected fat pocket between the cooling panels.
Controlled cooling begins
The fat cells within the treatment area are exposed to controlled cooling.
Apoptosis is triggered
The cold can initiate programmed death of susceptible fat cells.
Your body clears them gradually
The affected cells are processed over the following weeks and months – typically 6 to 12 weeks, with change continuing for around three months.
Fat loss, not weight loss
This is the single most important thing to understand before booking.
Fat freeze is not a weight-loss treatment. It is a body-contouring treatment for localised fat deposits, best suited to clients who are reasonably close to their preferred weight but struggle with specific areas.
Suitable areas include
It does not work on visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is the softer fat beneath the skin that can generally be pinched – that is what cryolipolysis targets. Visceral fat sits deeper, around the internal organs, and cannot be pulled into an applicator. A firm, protruding abdomen may therefore not be suitable for this treatment at all, and we will tell you if that is the case.
One, two or three applicators
Not every client needs the same number. An applicator means one treatment cup positioned over one suitable fat pocket.
Chin applicator — £55
Our dedicated smaller applicator for suitable pinchable fat beneath the chin. May help double-chin appearance, submental fullness and jawline contour.
Not every double chin is fat. It may be caused by loose skin, anatomy, muscle structure, genetics or ageing. If your concern is mainly loose skin, RF or another tightening treatment may suit better. We assess before assuming.
1 applicator — £75
One localised pocket – upper stomach, lower stomach, a small abdominal pocket, a small bra-line area or a localised back-fat pocket. Generally 45 to 60 minutes depending on the area and device protocol.
2 applicators — £99
Two compatible areas at once, ideal for symmetrical treatment: both love handles, both inner thighs, both outer thighs, both upper arms, or upper and lower stomach together.
3 applicators — £125
A more comprehensive treatment in one appointment – for example full stomach plus a flank, or three separate suitable fat pockets. The arrangement depends on your anatomy, fat distribution, applicator fit, treatment safety and device protocol.
We will never place additional applicators simply because they are available. Each applicator must have an appropriate and safe treatment area.

Consultation
We discuss your goals, medical history, medication, previous treatments, health conditions and weight stability.
Body assessment
Fat distribution, pinchable fat, skin quality, treatment area and applicator suitability.
Photographs and measurements
Baseline images or measurements may be taken so change can be assessed properly later.
Treatment mapping
The applicator position is marked. Correct placement is essential for a smooth, balanced contour.
Protective membrane and placement
An appropriate membrane is applied between the skin and the cooling applicator, then one, two or three applicators are positioned.
Vacuum and cooling
The tissue is gently drawn into the cup and the cooling cycle begins. Initially you may feel strong suction, cold, pulling and pressure. The area generally becomes numb as treatment progresses.
Removal and assessment
Once the cycle completes the applicator is removed and the area is assessed.
Aftercare
You receive personalised aftercare and know what to expect over the following weeks.
Timings follow the specific applicator and manufacturer protocol – our documented protocol is approximately 45 minutes for a single applicator, and approximately 30 minutes where two compatible areas are treated simultaneously.
How many treatments, and how often
1 to 3 treatments per area
Some clients are happy after one. Others need two or three on the same area to reach their desired contour. Our protocol specifies a maximum of three treatments to any given area.
At least 4 to 6 weeks apart
For repeat treatment of the same area. We may well leave it longer – because results develop gradually, there is little benefit in treating an area again before we can properly assess how it responded.
Results over 6 to 12 weeks
You may notice change after several weeks, with more visible contour change commonly developing over 6 to 12 weeks and continuing for around three months. Full assessment is usually at 12 to 16 weeks.
This is not like EMS, RF or cavitation. Fat freeze is not performed weekly on the same area, and any clinic offering that is not following a sensible protocol.
What we will and will not claim
How much fat can it reduce?
Results vary significantly between clients. The figure commonly quoted in cryolipolysis training and manufacturer material is a fat-layer reduction in the treated area of roughly 20 to 40% per treatment. That is a broad industry estimate, not a promise we are making about your result.
We do not guarantee a specific percentage, a number of inches, a dress size or a weight reduction.
Is it permanent?
Cryolipolysis is designed to trigger apoptosis in susceptible fat cells, and once those particular cells are destroyed and cleared they do not simply regenerate.
That does not mean the area can never become larger again. Remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight. Fat freeze cannot prevent future weight gain and should be viewed as body contouring, not protection against it.
Is it like liposuction?
No, and it should never be presented as equivalent. Liposuction is surgical – a cannula beneath the skin, fat physically removed, anaesthetic, and a surgical recovery, with far greater volume reduction possible.
Cryolipolysis is non-surgical, gradual, and for small or localised fat reduction.
After weight loss
Useful where stubborn localised pockets remain. But if your main concern is loose skin rather than fat, we may recommend RF, another skin-tightening treatment or a combined programme instead.
Sensation, downtime and side effects
What it feels like
Strong suction, pulling, pressure, intense cold and mild pinching at the start. The area then typically becomes increasingly numb and most clients relax for the remainder. No anaesthetic is normally required.
It would be wrong to say nobody feels discomfort. Pulling, cramping, tenderness, aching, tingling, temporary numbness and skin sensitivity are all possible.
Downtime
Generally little to none. Most clients return to work, driving, walking and normal daily activity straight afterwards.

Temporary numbness may persist longer than the visible redness.
After chin treatment
Swelling, tenderness, numbness, sensitivity and a temporary sensation of fullness in the throat can occur. This is one reason correct client selection, applicator placement and aftercare matter so much in this area.
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia
Cryolipolysis has a rare but important potential complication known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or PAH.
Instead of decreasing after treatment, the fat tissue in the treated area becomes larger and firmer. It is uncommon, but it must form part of informed consent, and you should not agree to fat freezing anywhere without having had it explained to you.
PAH generally does not resolve through further fat freeze treatments and may require surgical correction. We include it in our consent process because you are entitled to know about it before you decide, not afterwards.
How fat freeze compares
Versus cavitation
Fat freeze uses controlled cooling and works gradually over several weeks. Cavitation uses ultrasound within a body-contouring programme and is normally performed as a course. Which suits depends on the type and amount of fat.
Versus laser lipo
Laser lipo uses low-level light within a non-invasive programme and generally needs a course. Fat freeze may need fewer treatments to the same area.
Versus radio frequency
Fat freeze targets localised subcutaneous fat. RF targets skin firmness, collagen and mild laxity. Clients concerned about both may benefit from a combined plan.
Versus EMS
Fat freeze targets fat. EMS targets muscle contraction, strength and tone. Reducing a stubborn pocket and then improving underlying muscle definition can work well as a sequence.
Combining with RF
Where suitable, yes – useful where there is both a localised fat pocket and reduced skin firmness.
Combining with EMS or cavitation
Potentially, depending on your individual programme. We do not automatically perform every technology on every client. The combination is based on anatomy, area, fat depth, skin quality, recovery and objectives.
Who cannot have fat freezing
Cryolipolysis is not suitable for everyone, and some cold-related medical conditions are absolute contraindications.
