About this course
Tattoo removal is one of the most requested treatments in aesthetics and one of the easiest to do badly. This course gives you the wavelength science, the consultation discipline and the hands on practice to do it safely.
You will learn skin anatomy and why tattoo ink stays where it is, how laser removal actually works, and which wavelengths shift which ink colours. Just as importantly you will learn which colours will not shift, so you can tell a client the truth at consultation rather than three sessions in.
There is a full section on treating darker skin types safely, Fitzpatrick V and VI, which is where most of the risk sits.
The course finishes with case study reflections on what went wrong in real cases, which is usually the part students remember longest.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Understand and apply the legislation, regulation and laser safety requirements relevant to Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and IPL in the UK.
- Explain the roles of the Laser Protection Adviser, Laser Protection Supervisor and Authorised User, and what Local Rules must contain.
- Describe the anatomy of the skin, how tattoo ink stays in place, and how the laser and the immune system remove it.
- Match laser wavelengths to ink colours, and identify difficult and dangerous pigments.
- Carry out a thorough consultation and Fitzpatrick skin typing, and identify contra-indications and exclusions.
- Use the Kirby-Desai scale to estimate sessions and manage client expectations honestly.
- Perform and document a compliant patch test, and recognise wheal and flare and other adverse responses.
- Perform a full treatment step by step using safe technique and correct wavelength sequencing.
- Treat higher Fitzpatrick skin types safely, and know when not to treat.
- Give appropriate aftercare, recognise complications, and know when to refer to a GP or A&E.
- Complete accurate records using compliant consultation, consent and treatment documentation.
Duration and delivery
Your hardback workbook is posted to you when you book, and we ask you to read Sections 1 to 4 before you come in. You then attend one full practical training day, generally 09:30 to 17:30, at our academy, 26 The Avenue, Southampton SO17 1XL, in eight sessions covering regulation and laser safety, skin anatomy, wavelengths and ink colours, consultation, patch testing on a volunteer, the full treatment protocol and aftercare, and a supervised practical on live models. Timings are set by your trainer and adjusted to the group.

How you are assessed
Assessment is by a written knowledge review and short answer questions in the workbook, followed by supervised practical work on live models.
You demonstrate consultation, skin typing, patch testing, machine settings, technique and aftercare.
Your certificate is issued once both parts are complete.

Before you book
Entry requirements. A Level 3 qualification in Anatomy and Physiology, and a Laser and IPL Core of Knowledge certificate.
If you are missing either, you can take them with us first. Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology and Laser and IPL Core of Knowledge.
Insurance. Most insurers want to see an existing beauty or aesthetics qualification alongside a CPD certificate before they will cover you for this treatment.
