RF treatment requires more than simply heating the skin. Effective treatment means understanding tissue anatomy, RF energy, treatment depth, temperature, electrode configuration, contraindications and treatment endpoints.

What it is

What is radio frequency skin tightening?

Radio frequency, or RF, is a non-invasive treatment using electromagnetic energy to generate controlled heat within the skin and underlying tissues.

Unlike laser and IPL, RF does not rely on a particular colour of pigment to absorb the energy. Instead the energy passes through the tissue and creates controlled heating through resistance. The aim is to raise the temperature of the targeted tissue gradually, while continuously monitoring the skin and your comfort.

It may help the appearance of

  • Loose or crepey skin
  • Mild jowls
  • Reduced jawline definition
  • Neck laxity
  • Fine lines
  • Bingo wings
  • Loose stomach skin
  • Inner and outer thigh laxity
  • Cellulite appearance
  • Reduced firmness after weight loss
  • General skin ageing

RF is not a laser. It uses electromagnetic energy rather than laser light, and because it does not target melanin the way IPL and many laser systems do, it can suit a broad range of skin tones following individual assessment.

How it works

How RF tightens the skin

Radio frequency creates controlled heat within collagen-rich tissues. As the area reaches the appropriate temperature, several things can happen.

1

Immediate collagen contraction

Existing collagen fibres can temporarily contract when heated. This is why some clients notice a mild tightening effect immediately after treatment.

2

Fibroblast stimulation

Controlled heating can stimulate fibroblast activity. Fibroblasts are the cells involved in producing collagen, elastin and other structural components within the skin.

3

Collagen remodelling

The body’s remodelling response continues long after the appointment ends, which is why results develop progressively rather than appearing all at once.

What temperature does it reach?

The skin is warmed gradually while temperature and comfort are monitored. Our protocol generally works towards approximately 40°C, and once that is reached, controlled heating is maintained for the required treatment period. The aim is not to make the skin painfully hot. RF should feel like a comfortable, deep warming sensation.

The technology

The RF systems we use

Different RF systems deliver energy in different ways. We have access to different configurations so treatment can be matched to the area and the depth required.

Tripolar and multipolar RF

Multiple electrodes within the handpiece, with energy travelling between them through the tissue. The handpiece is moved continuously across the skin while therapeutic warmth is built and maintained.

Particularly useful for:

  • Face
  • Jawline
  • Neck
  • Décolletage
  • Upper arms
  • Smaller body areas
  • General rejuvenation

Monopolar RF

A different electrical pathway. Energy is delivered from the active handpiece and may travel through a larger volume of tissue before returning through a separate return electrode.

Particularly useful for:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Flanks
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Larger body areas

What is the grounding plate?

Some RF systems use a separate return electrode, commonly called a grounding plate or pad. It is positioned safely against the body before treatment and completes the electrical circuit: energy leaves the active handpiece, travels through the targeted tissue and returns through the return electrode. This allows a different pattern of energy delivery from bipolar, tripolar or multipolar systems. Not every RF treatment needs one – it depends on the area and the configuration selected.

Your course

How many treatments, and how often

6 to 8 treatments

RF works best as a course. Some clients notice a temporary improvement after one treatment, but the meaningful change develops gradually.

Usually once a week

Our standard programme is weekly for both face and body, giving tissues time to respond between appointments while collagen remodelling continues.

Maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks

After the initial course, maintenance helps support your result. The interval depends on the area, your age, skin condition, degree of laxity, lifestyle and individual response.

When will I see results?

Immediately

Some clients notice slight firmness, smoother-feeling skin and an improved appearance straight after treatment. This is largely the immediate contraction effect.

Progressively

The collagen-related improvement builds over the course – firmness, elasticity, smoother skin, reduced mild laxity and improved texture.

How long do results last? That varies, and is influenced by age, skin quality, weight changes, lifestyle, hormones, the degree of laxity, whether you complete the recommended course and whether you maintain it. RF cannot stop the natural ageing process.

Being straight with you

What RF will and will not do

Does it remove fat?

Skin-tightening RF is primarily for collagen stimulation, firmness, texture and mild laxity. Some body RF systems can form part of deeper body-contouring treatments.

If localised fat is your main concern, we may recommend cavitation, cryolipolysis or another fat-reduction approach instead. Cavitation and RF are often combined because they do different jobs – contour and skin quality.

Does it help cellulite?

It may improve the appearance of cellulite by improving skin firmness, supporting collagen remodelling, improving surface texture and creating controlled tissue heating.

We do not claim that RF permanently removes cellulite. The aim is smoother, firmer-looking skin.

After weight loss

Popular for the stomach, upper arms, thighs, buttocks and knees, where it may improve mild loose skin.

RF cannot remove large amounts of excess hanging skin. Clients with significant excess skin may need surgical assessment to achieve the result they are looking for.

After pregnancy

Pregnancy affects abdominal skin, collagen, elastin and tissue firmness. Once appropriate postpartum recovery has taken place and there are no contraindications, RF may be considered for suitable mild abdominal laxity.

RF is not designed to replace surgery where significant excess skin is present. It is best suited to mild to moderate laxity, early jowling, loss of firmness, crepey skin, mild post-weight-loss laxity, early facial ageing and cellulite appearance.

Comfort

What it feels like

Does it hurt?

Generally very comfortable. Most clients describe deep warmth, or a hot-stone style warming sensation. The area should feel warm but not painfully hot, and temperature and comfort are monitored throughout.

Do I need numbing cream?

No. Non-invasive RF does not normally require numbing cream, anaesthetic, needles or injections.

Is there downtime?

Generally little to none. Temporary mild redness, warmth or slight sensitivity can occur and usually settles quickly.

RF versus RF microneedling

These are different treatments. Our standard RF skin tightening uses an external handpiece with no needles and minimal downtime. RF microneedling physically penetrates the skin with needles before delivering RF energy, and is a more intensive treatment with more downtime.

RF versus HIFU

Both can be used for skin tightening but they work differently. RF uses controlled electromagnetic heating and is usually performed as a course, suiting mild laxity, firmness, texture and collagen maintenance. HIFU uses focused ultrasound at defined tissue depths and is often chosen for deeper focused lifting. Your practitioner will advise which suits your concern.

Safety

When RF may not be suitable

A full consultation and medical history are required before any treatment. Some conditions rule RF out entirely.

You must tell us if you have

  • A pacemaker
  • An implantable defibrillator
  • Any implanted electronic device
  • Significant cardiac conditions
  • Metal implants near the treatment area
  • Plates, screws or joint replacements
  • Recent surgery
  • Active infection
  • Open wounds
  • Active skin conditions
  • Any uncontrolled medical condition
  • Pregnancy

Pacemakers and electronic implants

RF uses electromagnetic energy. Clients with pacemakers, implantable defibrillators or other electronic medical implants must tell us before treatment.

Treatment will not proceed where it is contraindicated. This is not negotiable and is not a matter of signing a waiver.

Metal implants

If you have plates, screws, joint replacements or other metal implants you must tell us at consultation. Suitability depends on where the implant is and which RF technology is being used.

Treatment is available to clients aged 18 and over only, due to our insurance requirements.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How does RF skin tightening work?

Radio frequency produces controlled heating within targeted tissues, supporting collagen contraction, fibroblast stimulation and gradual collagen remodelling.

What types of RF do you use?

Tripolar and multipolar RF, and monopolar RF, depending on the area being treated.

What is the treatment with the grounding plate?

Some monopolar RF systems use a separate return electrode, or grounding plate, which completes the electrical circuit while treatment is delivered through the active handpiece.

Is RF a laser?

No. Radio frequency uses electromagnetic energy rather than laser light.

How many treatments do I need?

Approximately six to eight for progressive tightening and collagen stimulation.

How often should I have RF?

Usually once a week during the initial course.

How often is maintenance?

Approximately every six to eight weeks following the initial course.

How hot does the skin get?

Our protocol generally aims for approximately 40°C, with controlled heat maintained according to the area and protocol.

Does RF help jowls?

It may improve mild jowling caused by reduced skin firmness. It cannot replicate the result of surgery for significant laxity.

Does RF tighten the neck?

It may help improve mild to moderate loss of firmness in suitable clients.

Does RF work on bingo wings?

Yes. Upper arms are one of our most popular body RF areas.

Can RF tighten my stomach?

Yes. Full stomach is £69 per session, or £352 for a course of six.

Can RF tighten thighs?

Yes. Inner thighs, outer thighs and upper legs can all be treated, at £95 per area.

Can RF improve cellulite?

It may improve the appearance of cellulite by supporting skin firmness and texture. It does not permanently remove it.

Does RF remove fat?

Skin-tightening RF is primarily for firmness and collagen stimulation. Other body-contouring technologies may suit better where fat reduction is the objective.

Does treatment hurt?

Generally no. Most clients experience comfortable deep warmth.

Is there downtime?

Usually little to none.

Can darker skin tones have RF?

Yes. RF does not target melanin the way IPL and many lasers do, so it can suit a broad range of skin tones following assessment.

Can I have RF with a pacemaker?

Certain pacemakers and implanted electronic devices are contraindications. A full medical history must be completed before treatment, and we will not proceed where it is contraindicated.

What age do I need to be?

You must be 18 or older, due to our insurance requirements.
