About this qualification
This qualification provides the knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology associated with the facial area. It is often taken alongside or before advanced facial treatment qualifications, where a sound grasp of facial structure is essential.
Entry requirements
You will need a Level 3 qualification in Beauty Therapy and a Level 2 in Skin Care and Facial Treatments.
If you do not hold a formal qualification but have at least two years of occupational experience, you may still be considered. This is subject to an interview with the centre and a review of your current knowledge and skills. Entry is at the discretion of the centre.

How you are assessed
Internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence. There are no external written examinations. This qualification is available in England.

What is covered
- The structure and functions of the skin, its layers, cells and barrier
- Collagen, elastin, free radical damage and skin ageing
- Skin colour, melanogenesis, pigmentation and sun protection
- Hair, and the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems of the face
- Blood, circulation and the lymphatic system
- Wound healing, skin regeneration and controlled wounding treatments
- Common circulatory, lymphatic and endocrine disorders, including diabetes
- Skin terminology, disorders and skin cancers
How the assessment works
You complete short answer questions throughout the learning materials and a written assignment, all submitted to your tutor as your portfolio of evidence. The qualification is graded Pass or Fail. This is a knowledge qualification and does not on its own qualify you to carry out treatments.
