The Focus Awards Level 4 Certificate in Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments is a nationally regulated qualification for beauty and aesthetic professionals who want to specialise in laser and IPL. It builds the knowledge, practical skill and confidence to deliver these treatments safely to the public, with a focus on hair reduction and skin photo rejuvenation.

About this qualification
Training covers safe working practices, identifying and controlling hazards, recognising hair and skin conditions, and assessing whether a client is suitable for treatment.
Entry requirements
You will need a Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy or an equivalent professional qualification.
If you do not hold a formal qualification but have at least two years of relevant occupational experience, you may still be considered. This is subject to an interview with the centre and a review of your current knowledge and skills.
You must be aged 18 or over.

How you are assessed
Internally assessed through a portfolio of evidence. There are no external written examinations.
Assessment includes assessor observation, case studies and practical treatments. This qualification is available in England and Northern Ireland.

Duration and delivery
The qualification carries 220 guided learning hours and 310 hours of total qualification time. Taught sessions take place at our Southampton academy. You work from one training manual and workbook that holds the learning material for all four units and the pages where you record your answers and evidence. Tutorials normally take place every 4 to 8 weeks to check your progress and offer support.
How the assessment works
You are assessed in two ways and must succeed at both. Your knowledge is assessed through written answers and tasks in your workbook, in your own words. Your practical skill is assessed by your assessor observing you treat real clients: the health and safety unit at least twice, and the client care, hair removal and skin rejuvenation units at least three times each, on different dates. There is no external written examination. Work is internally quality assured, and the centre is externally quality assured by Focus Awards.
New to laser? Start with the package
If you are starting from scratch you will also need Core of Knowledge laser safety training, and the Level 3 Award in Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology gives you the underpinning knowledge. Booked together as the Hair and Skin Rejuvenation Start Up Package, the three come to £1,887.30 instead of £2,097, a 10% saving.
